MikroTik - Routers - Router Quick Start Guide

MikroTik routers often are great value for the money, however they may be hard to configure for newbies.

The routers can be configured using one of these methods.

  • Quickset. Easier for newbies.
  • Winbox. More complex. For experienced users, offers multiple window support, ability to copy-paste configurations, etc.
  • Webfig - browser based web-configuration utility; only limited features are available to configure.
  • Console - swiss-army knife of RouterOS. Every configuration option is available via the console.

Using Quickset

Type 192.168.88.1 in a browser.

NOTE: When you start the router, it automatically detects internet connectivity on Ethernet Port 1 and it will distribute internet access via other Ethernet ports and via WiFi.

WARNING: The wifi doesn’t come with any default password!

Since, wifi doesn’t have a default password, you do not need an Ethernet enabled computer or laptop to configure. You can even use your mobile phone to connect to wifi and point 192.168.88.1 in your browser in order to get to the “Quickset” page.

The default user admin also does not have a password, so once you type 192.168.88.1 in a web browser of your choice, you will be logged-in automatically.

Secure the Router

Since, wifi does not have a default password, it is highly recommended to secure the WiFi network.

Since, the default user admin does not have a password it is suggested to create a password for the admin user, or create a completely different user with all privileges and then drop the default user admin (after logging in successfully as the other user).

Using Winbox

Winbox is a small utility that allows administration of MikroTik RouterOS using a fast and simple GUI.

All Winbox interface functions mirror the console functions as close as possible.

NOTE: Some advanced and system critical configurations are not possible from winbox, like MAC address change on an interface.
