FreeNAS - Update FreeNAS - Update FreeNAS to TrueNAS
Pre-cursor
- Check if on latest version of current release.
- Check for updates. E.g. 11. No updates available.
- Check if Pools are Healthy, do not need re-silvering and are online.
- If Pools do need remediation then do this prior to upgrading.
- Backup of the actual data taken, just in case.
- Check services and ensure they are running.
- Ensure Plugins and Jails are running okay.
- Ensure Virtual machines are running okay.
- Stop any running Virtual machines.
- Take a backup of system configuration. Navigate to System → General.
Do the Upgrade
Navigate to the Dashboard, and click on the Check for Update option within System Information.

NOTE: Notice that it states No updates available.
This informs that there are no updates available against the current version 11 branch.
If there are updates available under this version 11 branch, it is recommended to first update to the most recent version, before continuing with the upgrade to TrueNAS.
Now check what update options are available, by clicking the down-down arrow:
We select the STABLE release.
This prompts to Switch Train.
Check the Update Information and read the Release Notes:
Click Download Updates.
Save the Configuration.
Download the Update:
This will download the updates:
and will then install the updates:
The system will automatically reboot a number of times.
Eventually, when done, Log back in.

It will display an introductory help message:
Click Get Started.
Check Alerts
Check any alters:
NOTE: The top message mentions about new ZFS features that affect Pools.
The other message shown here is around Plex Jail update.
These will both be updated in the next steps.
Upgrade Pool
Navigate to Storage → Pools.

UPDATE JAILS
- Take snapshot first, from Pools.
- Try update through option under GUI Jail menu.
- If not moved to version 12, then need to use command line:
- Type “iocage fetch”
- Choose option to move to
- Type “iocage upgrade -r 12.1-RELEASE PlexServer
- where PlexServer is the name of the Jail
- Does this look reasonable prompts - enter Y
- If you get asked to run something like ”/tmp/xyz“ then do so.
- Start Jail through GUI.
- Go to Shell, using option under the actual Jail.
- Type “htop” to check if running.
- Type “exit”.
- Check Jail version is now updated.
BACKUP system which is on new version.
